December is often a time to celebrate and to say thank you to your employees for their contributions throughout the year.
Friendship and camaraderie in the workplace is a powerful thing! Here are a few reasons why you may wish to consider joining the festivities this month:-
- Happiness is catching – is there anything better than a contagious giggle you absolutely can’t control?
-
Being social boosts your immune system – research has shown that being socially active can boost our immune system and reduce stress.
-
Laughter can – lower our blood pressure and increase memory and learning!
We certainly don’t want to ‘water dhown’ the festive spirits – but there are a few things that you may wish to consider when planning and communicating your workplace events:-
- Ensure employees are reminded this is a company event and should still comply with your company code of conduct.
-
Consider the amount of alcohol available – remembering also to provide an alternative ‘soft’ option for those who do not drink or are driving – and that alcohol loosens tongues and inhibitions! “Now let me tell you what I really think about my boss…..”
-
Ensure all arrangements take into consideration workforce diversity e.g. dietary requirements, disabled access, those on family breaks such as maternity or adoption leave.
…and the morning after
If your event is being held on a ‘school night’ what is your policy for employees who do not turn up for work the next day – or arrive to work under the influence of alcohol!
