It is estimated that we spend 60% of our waking hours at work! That’s a lot of talking…..
Talking is something we do often without thinking – but communicating actually takes quite a bit of effort to choose the right words, listening and getting our message across are all skills.
We talk to our partners, children, friends and family without giving much thought to how we’re doing it, poor communication in this environment can lead to arguments….
However, in the workplace the outcomes from communication breakdowns can be far more serious leading to poor productivity, demotivated employees – even litigation claims.
Take a look at the Tribunal Case in our August Newsletter [Teggart vs. TeleTech] to see how working in our current technological society, where communication is instant and global at the press of a button we can blur the lines between personal and working lives.
Sometimes the easiest of tasks in the work environment can go very wrong if they are not clearly communicated and documented.
Check your company policies and processes to ensure they contain sections on for example; social media, email, text, verbal and written communication, Harassment and Bullying, Dignity at Work, Code of Conduct, Grievance, Disciplinary, Intellectual Property.
Longer term this will aid relationships and potentially avoid costly litigation claims.
